Year 12 Service and Leadership Session Brexit Debate.

This week in our Year 12 Service and Leadership session, we welcomed two external speakers to the Academy to debate the motion ‘This house believes that Brexit is the best way forward for the UK’. Darren Grimes, Deputy Editor at BrexitCentral who supported the Vote Leave campaign, took the floor against Barney Scholes, Policy and Press Officer for Open Britain. Both speakers presented their opposing arguments and rebuttals, before taking questions from students. Students were very enthusiastic and engaged in the debate, with many challenging questions raised, ranging from where the saving of £350 million a week as a result of leaving the EU has gone, to questions on preserving human rights post-Brexit, as well as whether or not this country needs a second referendum. The strength of student feeling on the issues discussed was clearly evident, with well-articulated and passionate arguments put forward to our visiting speakers – all in all, a thrilling debate!
