Step Up - Oxford Posted: 9/02/22
We took 40 Year 11 students to Oxford University on part of the Step Up Programme, so that they could get a feel for Oxford's many colleges and what life as an Oxford student could be like. You can read how the students took to Oxford by reading their feedback below:
The trip to Oxford and its many colleges was a highlight of the week. I and many of the Year 11 students were honoured to be looked after by the hard working staff at the university and the amazing teachers who supervised our activities, and safely took us there and back. The grounds were beautiful and charming as the history and age were embraced in the gorgeous architecture, well kept throughout the years. Our handler was informative and respectful, the lecturer somewhat intimidating yet kind and the students were funny and relatable, quite the opposite to the traditional stereotype of an Oxbridge Student. I would like to emphasise how passionately I enjoyed the free meal and fully embraced the moment when living my Harry Potter dreams as my classmates and I sat on the Slytherin table in the great hall, unfortunately there were no floating candles to be seen anywhere! I enjoyed the trip and would recommend a visit, even if you are not interested in applying to a college there. Artemis B, Strand
On Tuesday, we had the privilege of visiting New College in Oxford as part of the Step-up programme. One aspect of the day I really enjoyed was when we had the scenic tour of the city of Oxford. I found it really interesting seeing the Bodleian Library which is a copyright library and visiting another college nearby (Jesus college). When we got back, we spoke to three undergraduates who gave us insight on what it was like being a student at an Oxford College. Overall, the trip was enjoyable and helped to boost my confidence in applying and understanding that it is achievable. Chidera Olebara, Bow
